Built Different: Parenting With and Through Disability - QFW Parenting S2E5
July is Disability Pride Month. This one's for the families raising a kid who's building different, the parents doing it while disabled themselves, and everyone carrying both at once. Real talk from The Table.
It's the first week of July. The fireworks are done, the school supply lists are starting to trickle in, and somewhere in there, quietly, it's Disability Pride Month.
We say quietly because that's often how it goes. Pride in June gets the parades and the storefronts. Disability Pride in July gets a lot less noise, even though for so many of us, these two things live in the same house. Sometimes in the same body.
So this week at The Table, we're sitting with it a little longer than a single conversation usually allows.
Listen to the episode:
What We Cover at The Table
- Why disability belongs at the center of this community's conversations, not the margins
- The noticing moment, evaluations, and the real cost of a diagnosis
- Finding providers who are disability-competent and affirming, and why you deserve both
- Invisible disability, the guilt spiral, and redefining what a "good parent" looks like
- Where all of this collides with healthcare access and money, right now
- Builder Moves: building an advocacy folder, interviewing providers, practicing the ask, and finding one person who gets it
A Note on Timing
This episode lands in a summer when the ground under family benefits is shifting fast. Medicaid and SNAP are getting harder to hold onto. If your family qualifies for a disability exemption, that paperwork is your protection, and getting it in order now matters more than it did a year ago. We touch on it here, and we go deep on it in this month's Kitchen Note, Benefits on the Clock.
If This One's for You
You're not doing it wrong. You're not asking for too much. And you're not doing it alone, even on the days it feels that way.
If this episode reaches something in you, do one thing with it: send it to someone in your Q Fam who's carrying the same load quietly. That's how we make sure nobody thinks they're the only one.
Then pull up to The Table for good. Join The Mix and The Monthly Mix lands in your inbox once a month, Builder hacks, Kitchen Notes, and Table Talk from families making it happen, together.
