It begins with a number that stopped us in our tracks: according to Vanguard's 2026 How America Saves report, women earning $100,000 to $150,000 a year saved 9.4% of every paycheck in 2025, compared to 8.8% for men at the same income. That's not the whole story, the pay gap and caregiving gap still mean women retire with smaller balances overall, but it's proof that the percentage you choose to set aside is a skill worth naming.

Then there's the Fed. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate steady for the fifth meeting in a row this July, which sounds like background noise until you realize what it means for your savings account: high-yield options are still paying real interest, some north of 4%. If your emergency fund is parked in a regular checking account, moving it takes about five minutes and it's money you're otherwise leaving on the table.

The bigger shift, though, is in how we think about savings altogether. Chasing a scary total number, three months of expenses, six months, whatever benchmark feels impossible this year, isn't the move. Building a system, the percentage you save and where that money actually sits, is something every family can do regardless of what this year's paycheck looks like.
